Foundation Overview

The International Spinal Development and Research Foundation was founded as a non-profit organization in 1994 by Dr. John Thalgott.  As a foundation, our primary goals are:

  • To contribute to the development of current concepts, techniques, and devices as used in spinal surgery.
  • To perform clinical research and publish results on new techniques, approaches, instruments, and implants for spinal surgery.
  • To educate US and international spinal surgeons.
  • To provide and perform expert testimony on legal cases related to the field of spinal surgery.

International Fellowship Program

The foundation orchestrates an international fellowship program that allows for fellows from all over the world to visit for two to three months each.  These fellows are exposed to new concepts, techniques, and implants months and sometimes years before they are introduced in the fellows’ home countries.  They observe and participate in clinic and surgeries with Dr. Thalgott, as well as having opportunities to participate in clinical research.  The has hosted over 40 fellows and observers from countries such as China, Korea, The Czech Republic, Thailand, Switzerland, Columbia, Brazil, Venezuela, and South Africa. For a list of participants, please visit our People page.

Legal Consultation and Testimony

The International Spinal Development and Research Foundation also provides legal services.  This includes patient chart/case review and depositions as well as providing expert testimony in court trials.  The foundation offers full powerpoint presentations that are specific to each individual trial as well as a full case overview and impressive operating room video showing the specific procedures performed on the patient.
